Free health screenings were offered June 29 for four hours with participants receiving free activity cards at the Sports Center as well as a chance to win an outdoor grill.

Griffin Hospital’s Health Initiative for Men (HiM) promotes having an annual physical and raises awareness about men’s health issues such as prostate and colorectal cancer.

Getting regular check-ups

Dr. Brian Sperling, left, urologist with Griffin Faculty Physicians, and Francis H. Michaud, a CPA in Ansonia, who helped begin Griffin Hospital’s Health Initiative for Men.

Francis H. Michaud, a CPA in Ansonia who helped begin Griffin Hospital’s HiM, said it’s important to promote men’s health as well as women’s health.

“American Cancer Society statistics show more men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year than women with breast cancer,” said Michaud, a New Haven resident.

He said he wanted to take action to inspire more men to get regular health check-ups, and contacted Griffin Hospital about what to do. “They have picked up the ball and run with it,” Michaud said.

In addition to sponsoring Men’s Health Day and other activities, HiM provides Father’s Day cards for school children to bring home that highlight the importance of regularly seeing a doctor.

Information and screening tests

The event at the Sports Center was held in recognition of Men’s Health Month and entitled “The Nuts & Bolts of Men’s Health.”

There were a series of health information tables and free health screenings, including prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test, blood sugar, blood pressure and body mass index.
