A witty satire
The play is the most celebrated comedy by Wilde, who subtitled it, “A trivial comedy for serious people.”
Jack loves Gwendolen, Algernon loves Cecily — but both Cecily and Gwendolen will only marry men named Earnest. Further complications arrive in the form of a handbag, some tea-cake and a mysterious invalid named Bunbury.
