Letter: Kudos to Derby’s GOP leadership

It is incredible that the Derby Democratic Town Committee leadership is already trying to blame Republican Tony Staffieri’s administration for the lack of Derby Downtown Renewal, despite new business coming into Derby.
The Derby Democratic leadership should blame themselves. When they nominated a young and inexperienced part-time church organist and full-time college student, former Mayor Marc Garofalo, for four terms in office as Derby’s “Chairman of the Board.”
As a full-time college student, Garofalo was too busy to look at his incoming mayoral paperwork and Democratic aldermen had to pack up his untouched correspondence into storage crates and haul it away. He found no time and did nothing to save historic Derby business buildings that once-housed Main Street businesses like F.W. Woolworths, Derby Jewelers and Howard & Barber and let them decay and eventually they had to be razed, leaving a steep bank that no developer really wants to build on due to the increased cost involved, especially in today’s weak economy.
Kudos to Republican Mayor Tony Staffieri and Community Development Director Sheila O’Malley for their team-work in bringing in Aldi supermarket and the Panera Bread store into Derby. Keep up the good work.
