Seymour police are investigating a Sunday morning armed robbery at Webster Bank, 15 New Haven Road.
Shortly before noon the Seymour Police Department received a 911 call from a bank customer reporting a robbery in progress. The patron was conducting business at the drive-up teller window and overheard the robbery in progress through the bank’s intercom speaker. Simultaneously, police received another call from a bank employee also reporting a robbery in progress.
Officers responded to the bank and confirmed a robbery had taken place. The Detective Division began an investigation with assistance from the New Haven FBI and several state troopers, who helped search for the suspect.
Witnesses described the suspect as a black male about 6’2” tall, wearing a dark-colored jacket, blue jeans, brown shoes and a ski mask style hat which partially covered his face. The suspect was wearing white gloves and carried a light colored shopping bag into the bank.
After entering the bank, the suspect displayed a black handgun and ordered several patrons of the bank and bank employees to the ground. The suspect then leaped over the teller’s counter and filled the shopping style bag with money from the drawer. The suspect then leaped back over the counter and exited the bank through the front door with an undetermined amount of money.
The suspect then ran to the rear of the bank parking lot onto Spruce St. where he was immediately picked up by an accomplice driving a vehicle witnesses described as a mid- to late-90s dark-colored four-door Cadillac, possibly a Deville or Fleetwood.
This robbery remains under investigation. Anyone who may have information or observed anything suspicious is asked to contact the Seymour Police Department at 203-881-7601. All information will be kept confidential.
