Derby, Seymour grapplers place at Class S

The Derby High wrestling team had five wrestlers earn top six finishes, while Seymour High placed two, at the Class S state wrestling championship at Haddam-Killingworth High School on Saturday.

Windham rolled to the team title with 238.5 points, followed by hosts H-K (135.5), Terryville (131), Oxford (131), Montville (127.5) and Derby (120). Seymour finished 14th overall with 56.5 points.

Josh Russell was second at 106 for Derby, while Tyler Dobek (120) and Matt Nicolari (170) also lost their finals’ decisions. Sebastian Hernandez placed fourth at 138 and Patrick Miko was fifth at 113.

Seymour’s Dane Christiansen was second at 132 and Xavier Vidal took fifth at 126.

All seven Valley wrestlers qualified for the State Open, which begins on Friday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
